Chris’s American Restaurant, a classic eatery located in Brookfield, Connecticut, has a long and varied history dating back to the 1920s. Starting as a humble hot dog stand during the era of Prohibition, the restaurant became Ed’s Cigar Box, a tavern speakeasy that enjoyed great success at the time. For the next 25 years, Ed’s Cigar Box would be Lavelle’s Wagon Wheel. After a few years, the Wagon Wheel gave way to a new restaurant called the Red Rooster. For several years during the 1950s, the Red Rooster served American cuisine in a style similar to that of Chris’s American Restaurant. Next, an establishment known as The Green Olive fed local patrons until 1969, when The Missteak took its place. The Brookfield, Connecticut, location was then named Fiddler’s Restaurant until Chris Bruno transformed it into Chris’s American Restaurant, serving traditional American meals with European and Asian influences in 2003. A talented chef with New York restaurant experience and a degree in culinary arts from Johnson & Wales University, Chris Bruno reinvented the location as Chris’s American Restaurant. The legacy of Chris’s American Restaurant has been cemented through Chris Bruno’s desire to bring creative, flavorful dishes to his diners. Chris’s American Restaurant was recently renamed 189 Sports Cafe, though the atmosphere and flavors that made Fiddler’s Restaurant and Chris’s American Restaurant popular are still present. As Head Chef, Chris Bruno brings an eclectic approach to cuisine with skills he learned from chefs with years of experience.
